1. Wash it and let it dry completely

Rinse off salt, sand, grass clippings and pollen before the cart sits. Contaminants that stay on paint and hardware for four months do more damage than the same contaminants wiped off in a week.

Wash with a mild soap, rinse thoroughly, then dry the body, seats and undercarriage. Do not cover a damp cart. Trapped moisture under a cover is the single most common cause of mildew on seats.

2. Clean and condition the interior

Wipe marine vinyl seats with a gentle cleaner and let them dry fully. Remove everything from storage compartments, especially anything organic. A forgotten sleeve of crackers or a half-empty bottle invites pests.

3. Set the correct storage charge level

Do not store a lithium cart at 100 percent and do not store it near empty. A partial state of charge is easier on the pack over a long layup. Confirm the exact recommended storage charge level in your Costa owner’s manual and set it there before you disconnect anything.

4. Switch off and disconnect main power

Turn the key off, remove it, and use the main power switch or disconnect as directed in your manual. This stops the small background draws that accumulate over months and prevents anyone from moving the cart while you are away.

5. Set tire pressure and take weight off flat spots

Inflate tires to the pressure listed on the placard or in your manual. Tires slowly lose air over a long layup, and a cart sitting on soft tires for months can develop flat spots.

If you can, move the cart a few feet once a month so the tires do not rest in the same position the entire time. That single habit solves the problem without jack stands.

6. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels

Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and add wheel chocks on any surface with a slope. Concrete is better than dirt or grass, which wick moisture upward into the chassis and undercarriage.

7. Cover it properly

Use a breathable cover, not a plastic tarp. Plastic traps humidity against the finish and the seats. Indoor storage in a garage or climate-controlled unit is best, and a covered carport is the acceptable second choice.

Leave a few inches of clearance around the cart so air can move. A cart wedged tight against a wall and a water heater collects condensation on the side you cannot see.

Storing an electric golf cart long term: what to monitor

  • Do not skip the wash. Salt and organic debris that sit for a season leave marks that a spring wash will not lift.

Reactivation: bringing the cart back

Reactivation should take about twenty minutes. Work in order rather than jumping straight to a drive.

  1. Remove the cover and inspect. Look for moisture, pests, nests and any staining on seats or floor.
  2. Reconnect main power and confirm the system comes up normally with no alerts.
  3. Charge to your normal operating level before the first drive.
  4. Check tire pressure and reinflate to spec. Expect some loss over a long layup.
  5. Test the brakes at low speed in an open area before you go anywhere with traffic or pedestrians.
  6. Check lights, horn, turn signals, mirrors and seat belts. These are the items that determine whether the cart still meets local requirements.
  7. Wash and detail. Storage dust dulls the finish even indoors.

Then take a short shakedown drive on quiet roads. Listen for anything new in the steering, suspension or brakes before you take the cart into your normal routes.

A note on street-legal status after storage

Whether your cart may be driven on public roads depends entirely on local LSV law, and those rules vary by state, county and municipality. Registration, insurance and inspection requirements can change while you are away.

Before your first drive back, confirm your registration and insurance are current and that all required equipment is working. If you split time between two communities, check the rules in both.

Storage tips for HOAs, clubs and developers

If you manage a fleet rather than a single cart, the same principles scale with a few additions.

  • Log the storage charge level and date for each unit so reactivation is a checklist, not a guess.
  • Store on concrete under cover with airflow between units rather than parked bumper to bumper.
  • Stagger reactivation across a week so your service resource can address issues one at a time.
  • Photograph each unit at layup to document condition before the season closes.
